We got to the hospital today. Wendy had spent the night with Mom and it was a LONG night!! Mom was going crazy in the bed and felt like the clock was moving backwards. But she has not slept all day, so maybe she will sleep better tonight. Wendy was SUCH a TROOPER!!
After her higher and clear urine output yesterday, I was SO disappointed today when I got to the hospital and found out that her creatinine had gone from 4.4 up to 4.9 and her BUN had also hiked up to 80. Dr. Rich is going to hold off another day but if her numbers don't improve by Friday, they are going to do dialysis on Friday. SAD... but we don't want her lack of kidney function to harm other organs in her body. It all ties together and when one organ doesn't function properly, it affects all the others. Even today Mom was noticing that she is getting the shakes in her hands. When we asked the nurse about it tonight, she said that you can get the shakes if the toxins in your body start building up too high. I guess you go with the lesser of two evils, and if we can give her a couple of treatments, maybe her kidneys will kick back into shape. If we could avoid dialysis, we would. Well, we take things day by day.
For those who don't know about dialysis... this is what we've been told. They take her blood out, clean out the toxins, then put it back. I asked if they take out fluids as well, and he said that when they take the fluids out of the blood, the blood pulls fluids back into the blood from other parts of the body, which is how they get fluids out of the body. Interesting, huh?
The good points are this...Mom's strength seems to be good. The physical therapist took her out for a stroll around the "block". She was moving so fast that she almost ran over a doctor. That's good!! Christina brought her three little kids over (including her baby Stephen, who Mom hadn't seen) and Scott & Melissa brought over Derek and their two little ones. Since we couldn't bring kids under 13 years old back into the unit, we got a wheelchair for Mom and took her out to see everyone. She had a great time entertaining until we decided we needed to get her back to rest. She always loves company.
Well, hopefully she will have a better night and lab reports will be better tomorrow...
